Here are some more details about this fish and no problem using the pics if you would like to. I also caught a couple fish on the 50, using mackeral. One was a little sucker about 50 pounds. The other was about 120 that was actually snagged in the belly. Seemed bigger as I couldn’t get his head turned around but no problem landing him.

Just back from a 13 day trip to the Clarion buffer zone on the Intrepid. My best fish of the trip and new personal best taped out at 161 according to the Captain. During one of those mid day lulls, I dropped down to 80 and couldn’t get bit. I then momentarily lost my mind and tied a Mustad demon 6/0 3x ringed circle hook on one of my jig sticks, a Seeker 80XH with a Tiburon SST 8 filled with 100 hollow, 60# pink Yozuri fluoro top shot. As soon as I threw it out, it was bit. I think the fish came out from under the boat. Anyway, sucker took about 3/4 of the spool on the first run against about 17 lbs. of drag. After I got it stopped, it was a little work, but I beat his butt and got him. The weather was coming up with big swells and wind that day but I used it to my advantage on this fish. When the boat rose, I palmed the spool to lift him and not give him have any more line. I’d then crank down on him when the boat fell. Seemed like the Tib worked great like this as it would shift to high gear on the down stroke and I would get a lot of line. The rest of the time, I could keep cranking in low gear ,still get line and keep maximum pressure on the fish. One of the crewman with me on this fish remarked that he was impressed with how the reel did on this fish. (Believe me, he was skeptical when he first joined me and saw the line disappearing off the reel on the first run!). Anyway, really impressed with the reel’s smooth drag and cranking power when needed. Thanks for making a great product!

Thanks, They all came on the sst30. I only hade 100 lb spectra on the 20 so I opted to stick with the 30 that had the 130 Line One spectra. That big fish never had a chance and only emptied about a quarter of the spectra! Keep in mind that I was fishing a 130 lb – 25 foot topshot of momoi fluorocarbon. I am 100% positive I could have done a few of the big fish in on the 20 if I had the 130 spectra on it, I wasn’t to secure with the 100 lb spectra. I am so impressed on the freespool after the mod’s, they sure spin better the my internationals that have been balanced and blueprinted by Cal. I cant wait for the 50 size to come out, I want one. Let me know if you need any more info on the trip.

Tight lines,

I just wanted to thank you for beefing up the drag in my SST 30 and 20 to fish 100 lb line. Your work paid off and gained me a second place jackpot on my ten day last week aboard the Polaris Supreme. I landed two cows over the 200 lb mark, with the largest weighing in at 248.6 lbs and the other at 201.4 lbs. I also landed another three big boys between 162 to 174 lbs for a total of five fat boys. I have a few photos of my catch attached to this email.

I have been fishing your smart shift reels for a couple of years now and really love the automatic shifting two speeds. I noticed that one of the other angler’s aboard my trip had added a couple of new tibs to his arsenal.

Here are the photo’s, enjoy.

Yellowfin. It is documented in Western Outdoor News. I have copies.

Caught the tuna at daybreak with a fly lined mackerel. You know the reel. Bought it from Ken’s in Oceanside.

The reel was packed with 80lb spectra, and 130lb short top shot Izorline. The fight lasted 2 hours. The boat was the Qualifier 105, one of their Fall trips last year.

The reel performed magnificently. It shifted back and forth on its own throughout the fight, saving me valuable time at crucial moments. When the cow tuna ran towards the boat, giving me slack, the Smart Shift shifted immediately into high gear, allowing me to gain line as fast as I could turn the handle. When the beast dove deep underneath to perform its circle dance, the reel shifted automatically into low gear, enabling me to grind it out with patience to my advantage. At that point, the drags were set at full and there was no slippage, once the mono was back securely onto the reel. My main concern as always became traffic with other anglers and the rudder/props under a big, drifting boat, but that had nothing to do with rod or reel.

Regards, Bill
